The 2018 Australian Open marked a defining moment in Roger Federer's illustrious career. Amidst whispers questioning his longevity and ability to secure another Grand Slam title, Federer answered with a performance that was both a masterclass in tennis and a testament to his indomitable spirit. His victories against formidable opponents, including a quarter-final win over Tomas Berdych and a semi-final where Korea’s Chung Hyeon had to withdraw, led him to a gripping final against Marin Cilic.

This was not their first Grand Slam final encounter; they had faced each other at Wimbledon in 2017 where Federer claimed victory. However, this time, an unhampered Cilic was in lethal form, pushing the match into a nail-biting five-set decider. The final set saw Federer's seasoned prowess shine through as he won 6-1, solidifying his 20th Grand Slam title - an unprecedented feat in men's tennis.

This tournament victory holds a special place in the annals of tennis history. It marked Federer's sixth Australian Open win and his 20th Grand Slam victory overall, making him the first man to reach this milestone. By doing so, Federer joined an elite pantheon of players, including Serena Williams and Steffi Graf, underlining his status as one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen. The tournament would mark Federer's final Grand Slam victory, spanning all the way from Wimbledon 2003.
